Harold Rayfield Ruttley

Harold, better known as “Rut” to all his friends was born in Boomi New South Wales on the 31st May 1928.

He went to school in Coonamble and went on to work at the Holden dealership there for some years.

In 1940 he moved to Moree to work for C J Davis carting livestock all over NSW and Queensland and wool to Newcastle up until C J Davis retired.

He moved to Collarenebri to work for Jim Pim carting livestock to Brisbane for 4 years, and then moved to Narrabri to work for Lex Gordon for the next 30 years.

He started carting livestock and wool to Newcastle and Nitropril (explosive) with road trains to the mines in central Queensland. He then went on to carting steel to Darwin and grinding balls to the Ranger mine in Jabiru. During the big floods of 1976, Rut was stuck at Winton for 8 weeks unable to go anywhere till the floods receded and the roads repaired. In his late years he carted meal from Narrabri to Melbourne and steel to Brisbane on the return trip.

Sadly Rut passed away on the 24th September 1992. He will always be remembered for his ability to have a joke at any opportunity. He was truly a great character and is sadly missed on the Australian Highways.
