Reg Holme

17/12/2014 RIP

Reginald Charles Holme (better known as Reg) was born in Barmera South Australia in 1945. He was 16 years old when he started driving for Rex Kruger of Barmera, carting freight from the Riverland to Melbourne.  Over the next few years Reg drove for Riverland based companies such as Fletchers Freighters, where he drove to Melbourne, and Rex Coates, where he carried freight to Adelaide before he started doing the Adelaide runs for Jack Dowd.

By 1973, Reg and his wife, Pat, had moved to Loxton in South Australia where they decided to buy Jack Dowd’s business which consisted of an old Leyland with a  semi-trailer set up. His freight was produce from Loxton and the surrounding district to the Adelaide Markets.

Reg and Pat served the local community carting local produce until 1988 when they made the decision to close the business.  Reg continued to drive for other companies and in 1998 moved to Waikerie where he drove for C.J De Vito, and Evans Transport and Dyers Transport which were both based in Renmark South Australia. After this period of time Reg  semi -retired.

Driving was in Reg’s blood, so although retired, Reg continued to work. He carted grapes every year for his next door neighbour right up to three months before he was diagnosed with cancer in June 2014.

Reg passed away on December 17th 2014.  He is survived by his wife, Pat, and four sons – two of whom have followed in his footsteps and became truck drivers themselves.
