The Cooper S first appeared in 1963 and was produced until 1971. It was developed from the original Mini by world champion racing car constructor John Cooper.

The Cooper S differed from the standard Mini with
• 970, 1071 and 1275cc engines
• Different head assembly, large valves and double valve springs
• 2 x 1 ½ SU carburettors
• Extractor type large diameter exhaust system
• Higher lift/duration camshaft with double row chain
• Nitrided crankshaft

• Recurved distributor with mechanical advance only
