Lyndon Hammersley

Lyndon Hammersley, known as Toby, was born in June in 1962, one of eight children to Robert (Bob) and Fay Hammersley who were living in the Lilydale District, North East of Tasmania. Toby started his working career at Gay-dor Plastics making poly pipes but at the age of 23 he moved on to follow in his father’s footsteps, driving log trucks.

Toby started driving for Scott Arnold (Taslog Transport), a family well known for saw milling and wood chipping in Tasmania. Toby’s first truck was a White Roadboss with a 270 horsepower Cat engine with no engine brake. This truck was followed by a series of R Model Macks, Ford Louisvilles and V8 Macks before he went on to drive Kenworths. Over the many years Toby has had the opportunity of driving different trucks and configurations from single trailers to road train combinations. These days Toby is driving a FH Volvo 700 with a B-Double combination.

As Taslog Transport grew and the demand for timber increased, twelve logging jobs were established around the state. Toby moved on to become the fleet manager of the company, managing 35 log trucks, while still driving himself, travelling most of Tasmania from the North East to deep in the South and as far as the West Coast. During periods of quiet times Toby took the opportunity to drive on the mainland. In the late nineties he carted cotton in Moree while in 2011 he assisted with the clean-up of downed logs in Townsville after Cyclone Yasi.

Toby has established a long career driving and organising transportation, has a wealth of knowledge in the transport sector and is very well known and liked in the timber industry, clocking up millions of miles on the road. He has recently celebrated his own milestone working for Taslog Transport for 40 years.
