Rodney Currell

Rod Currell, affectionately known as Rod, Roddy (or sometimes ‘Strop’ if he is a little weary) was born on the 28th of October 1960, making him almost 65 years of age. After leaving school Rod was always destined to be a part of the transport industry. Finishing his employment at a local service station, Rod began following in his brothers’ footsteps and took up employment with Jim and Helen Savage from Savage Stock Transport working with Stockmaster for a further 13 years.

Rod’s early years in the industry took him all across the eastern states of Australia and saw him become one of the first drivers to operate a 4-deck sheep crate combination. He was also one of the first drivers of a B-double cattle and sheep crate combination in Australia. Over the years, Rod developed into a highly skilled and much respected multi-combination driver, with a deep passion for livestock cartage.

Rod is highly respected for his dedication, resilience and commitment to the job, all of which were duly tested one Friday night at Tabbita feedlot. While loading with his long-time friend and mate, Mick Maloney, a fiery bullock kicked Rod in the knee, completely displacing his kneecap. Despite the injury Rod, with Mick’s help, continued loading cattle and went on to complete an 1100km journey to Beef City before seeking medical attention. Whilst Rod may have needed Mick’s support that trip, Mick fondly recalls how Rod’s camaraderie and support over many years on the road made even the toughest miles easier to endure.

Rod began his employment with Martins Stock Haulage as a livestock driver in 1993 and after 31 years of service is still one of the longest-serving employees.

After hauling thousands of cattle across New South Wales and Queensland, Rod took a turn in his career in 2001 when he completed his Certificate III in Transport and Distribution. He transitioned into a role as an allocator within the Martins Operations Team in 2014. Over the past 12 years Roddy has played a significant role in directing Martins’ large fleet across Australia. Roddy has also mentored many employees and with his exceptional work ethic is a wonderful role mode.

Rod’s ability to balance hard work with a good laugh and an engaging yarn has made him a beloved figure, not only at Martins Stock Haulage but within the transport industry.
