Anthony Kirchner
Anthony John Kirchner (Tony) was born in 1954 in Crystal Brook, South Australia. He spent his early years on the family farm in Yumali, South Australia, where he developed a strong work ethic and interest in machinery. Seeking to build a career in the trucking and mechanical industry, Tony moved to Adelaide and began a diesel mechanic apprenticeship with International Trucks. This step marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the transport and heavy vehicle repair industry.
After gaining experience through various jobs across South Australia and Western Australia, Tony eventually settled in Horsham, Victoria. In 1984, he founded his own truck repair business, Kirchner Trucks. His reputation for quality work and dedication to service quickly grew, and in 1989 he became a sub-dealer for Kenworth trucks. This marked a significant milestone in the expansion of his business.
By 1992, Tony had a new, purpose-built premises constructed on Stawell Road in Horsham. Around this time, the business also secured dealership status for Volvo trucks and Cummins engines. To manage the increasing demand, Tony’s wife Jenny joined the company in an administrative role, and additional staff were hired. The growing team enabled the business to serve both local and interstate trucking needs along key freight routes, including the Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth Western Highway and the Henty and Wimmera Highways.
Kirchner Trucks became known for its round-the-clock commitment, often providing roadside assistance during long days, nights, and weekends. The workshop was a hub for maintaining and repairing heavy vehicles, supporting both the local transport sector and drivers passing through the region. Tony’s two sons, Lee and Brad, later joined the business, continuing the family’s involvement in the industry.
After 40 years of dedicated service to the transport sector, Tony sold Kirchner Trucks to the CMV Group. The business continues today as the Wimmera Truck Centre, upholding the legacy Tony established.
Now retired in Horsham, Tony remains actively involved in the industry. He supports his son Lee, who has followed in his father’s footsteps by opening his own truck repair workshop. Tony’s lifelong dedication to the transport industry and his contributions to regional trucking services have left a lasting impact on the community.
