Timothy Ancich

Timothy John Ancich, also known as ‘Timmy’, was born in Liverpool, Sydney, NSW in May 1961, where he, along with his proud parents Jack and Judy Ancich and his 3 sisters lived. Tim always refers to himself as the ‘main man’. His father, ‘Jack’ Ancich, is also on the National Road Transport Museum’s Wall of Fame. Tim was always destined to follow his father into interstate transport, later joining the company JJ & AC Ancich & Son Pty Ltd.

After school, he would work in the yard at home on the trucks, washing the trucks and trailers, painting hubs, changing tyres, and typing down tarps on future loads. The first trip he remembers going on with his dad was a journey to Perth at the age of 13, where he had to fly home to attend his first day of high school. Later he would accompany his cousin, Grant Mills, in a 1418 Mercedes Benz to assist loading trailers and delivering hay to Forbes.

At 16 years and 9 months, Tim got his driver's license and completed four trips to Cairns in the 1924 Benz. It wasn’t until 1979 when Tim got his truck license. His first truck was a 1626 Benz, which he drove working for RS Williams at Lansvale, carting freight to Cairns, often returning with loads of potatoes for David Nix and other farmers at the Sydney Markets.

The family business was JJ & AC Ancich & Sons Pty Ltd. They purchased a 2238 Benz which ran to Perth carting general freight and machinery for MD Machinery, Norm Gardner and N & L Transport. Tim’s long-term vehicle was a 1991 F16 Volvo which he drove Australia wide during his 45 years in the business. His most frequented routes were to Perth, the North West and Far North Queensland. He also carried steel for Triangle Transport on road trains, cable drums for Tony George and large water pipes for Simons Transport. Over the years Timothy has carted general freight, steel, water pipes, hay, grain, fruits, vegetables and large machinery Australia wide. The business eventually owned 2 trucks and 8 trailers.

Timothy met and married his wife Linda Graewe on 29 August1992 and together, they had four boys; Andrew, Brenton, Daryl and Thomas. They later shifted their life to live on a property at Singleton in 2005. Since then, Tim enjoyed many trips with his own children, as they would often tag along for the ride.

Tim took over the business when his father retired, completing his transport career carting for Tom Lawler, Rapid Spray Australia, NQX and K&S Freighters. Timmy is now semiretired and is still living in Singleton. He suffers the effects of Parkinson’s Disease but is still the same larrikin he always was.

When it comes to sharing a memory from his days trucking, Timmy says “Every day in the truck is a memory”.
